PM urges SSF to ensure security without distancing him from people

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday called on the Special Security Force (SSF) to maintain a balance between ensuring the security of the head of government and preserving his close connection with the people, saying public trust and affection remain his greatest source of strength.

Speaking at a program marking the 40th founding anniversary of the SSF at Shapla Hall of the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon, he said security arrangements should not create barriers between elected leaders and the citizens they serve.

“As head of government, my greatest reliance is on the trust and love of the people,” he said. Therefore, I urge the SSF, as a sophisticated and professional force, to ensure that the security cordon does not push the prime minister away from the people," he said.

The prime minister noted that modern security challenges have become increasingly complex due to changing socio-economic, political and geopolitical realities, as well as rapid technological advancements.

“As a specialized force, there is no room for the SSF to lag behind in courage, professionalism, strategy or cutting-edge technology. The force must remain prepared at all times to meet the demands of the changing times,” he said.

The prime minister said the SSF has handled many critical responsibilities since its establishment. He also congratulated former and current members of the force and praised their professionalism and dedication.

He highlighted the SSF’s role in ensuring the security of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and thanked the force for coordinating arrangements after her death.

The prime minister said the SSF has been carrying out its security duties in line with established rules and procedures since the democratic government assumed office after the national elections. He also said he had decided to reduce the size of his motorcade to ease public inconvenience.

During the event, the prime minister inaugurated the SSF’s newly built firing range and observed a demonstration exercise. He said he hoped members of the force would make full use of the facility to further improve their professional skills.

He also said the SSF’s operational “Red Book” has been revised and modernized for the first time since 2002. He said the updated document more clearly defines the force’s operational procedures, responsibilities and legal protections.

The prime minister said the SSF is made up of carefully selected officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and Ansar forces, who receive advanced training at home and abroad. He said the government would continue taking all necessary steps to modernize and strengthen the force.

He also urged SSF personnel to maintain courteous behavior while carrying out their duties. He said members of the force must protect important state figures without causing unnecessary hardship or mistreatment to ordinary citizens.
