LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said there was widespread corruption in local government institutions in the past.
He made the remarks while briefing reporters after a working session of the ministry on Tuesday, the third day of the four-day DC conference.
Responding to questions about directions from deputy commissioners (DCs), the minister said: “They have made several suggestions, and we have accepted them. Local government is the foundation of our democracy and the most important grassroots institution. If this sector is strengthened, democracy and the state will also be strengthened.”
Mirza Fakhrul said the government will work in coordination with members of parliament to implement programs undertaken by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
“These programs must be carried out with the advice of MPs and with the participation of all local government representatives,” he added.
