Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Sunday said that government has taken several key decisions to ensure smooth travel during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr, provide relief to the public, and avert a possible fuel shortage.
Speaking to reporters after a law and order meeting on Eid-ul-Fitr as well as Independence and National Day, Salahuddin Ahmed said the traditional decorative lighting on government and private buildings will not be held this year due to the current situation.
“Considering the circumstances, there will be no decorative illumination for Independence and National Day this year,” he said.
The Home Minister explained that the decision was taken as part of austerity measures aimed at conserving energy and preventing a potential fuel crisis.
“Every year, decorative lighting is arranged on government and private buildings to mark Independence and National Day. However, this year the government has decided to refrain from doing so in order to save fuel,” he added.
Salahuddin Ahmed also said the government has taken coordinated initiatives to maintain law and order ahead of Eid and to ensure the timely payment of workers’ salaries and bonuses.
He noted that two separate meetings were held focusing on preparations for Eid travel and public comfort. The discussions covered security arrangements, transportation management, the situation in industrial areas, and the safety of ordinary citizens.
Meanwhile, Genocide Day on March 25 will be observed with due solemnity. The Ministry of Liberation War Affairs will lead the observance, with support from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, while the Ministry of Home Affairs will ensure necessary security arrangements.
The government will ensure the highest level of security at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on March 26 as the country observes Independence Day.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the Leader of the Opposition, and leaders of various political parties and organisations will place wreaths at the memorial to pay tribute to the martyrs.
The Home Minister said coordinated measures will be taken among relevant agencies to ensure smooth transportation and easy access to the memorial area during the ceremonies.
He added that programmes marking Independence Day (Bangladesh) will not be limited to the capital. Observances will also be held across the country at district and upazila levels with due dignity and importance. Local administrations have been instructed to carry out their responsibilities sincerely to ensure proper celebrations.
Regarding possible labour unrest ahead of Eid al Fitr in industrial zones, the minister said the government has designated a focal point to address any emerging issues. The chief of the Industrial Police, an additional inspector general of police, has been assigned the responsibility.
He will coordinate with workers’ and employers’ organisations through discussions to prevent any instability before Eid.
Speaking about the payment of wages and benefits for workers in the garment sector, the minister said that during meetings with factory owners they assured the government that workers’ salaries, allowances and bonuses would be paid before Eid.
He also noted that, alongside the government, the banking sector will provide the necessary support to facilitate these payments. However, factory owners have been advised to inform the government in advance if any establishment anticipates difficulties in making the payments.
