Exhumation of 182 unidentified July martyrs begins Sunday

The process of exhuming the remains of 182 unidentified martyrs buried at the Rayerbazar Cemetery in Mohammadpur during the July uprising will begin on Sunday.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) will commence the collection of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) samples from that day.

The procedure will start in the presence of forensic expert Dr Luis Fondebrider, CID Chief Additional IGP Md Sibgat Ullah and other senior officials.

Earlier, on December 2, CID officials inspected the graves of the unidentified martyrs at the Rayerbazar Intellectuals’ Cemetery.

On August 4, Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman ordered the exhumation in response to a police petition.

The application was filed before the court by Mohammadpur Police Station Sub-Inspector Mahidul Islam.

The petition stated that during the anti-discrimination student movement—born out of the quota reform protests—men and women of various ages lost their lives.

Officials of the CID’s forensic unit said a tent has been set up at the Intellectuals’ Cemetery to facilitate the exhumation of the unidentified martyrs of the July uprising. Once the remains are exhumed, all procedural work, including post-mortem examinations, will be conducted inside the temporary structure.

The bodies will then be reburied following proper protocols.
