The Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs has issued a gazette notification declaring that any individual formally charged at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will be disqualified from becoming or remaining a Member of Parliament (MP).
Published on Monday by the Printing and Publication Wing of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, the notification outlines a sweeping disqualification framework for individuals facing formal charges at the ICT.
According to the gazette, once a formal charge is filed, the accused will be deemed ineligible to contest or hold positions in the National Parliament.
The disqualification also extends to local government roles, including member, commissioner, chairman, mayor, or administrator of any local body.
Furthermore, such individuals will be barred from appointments within the service of the Republic or from holding any other public office.
However, the provision includes a safeguard: it will not apply to individuals who have been acquitted or discharged by the tribunal.
