Those injured in the July uprising, the July warriors, will begin receiving monthly allowances starting July, Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk E Azam has said.
Faruk made the announcement during an interview on Monday, in his office at the Secretariat.
He said that in addition to the monthly allowance, these injured warriors will also be entitled to lifelong free treatment at all government medical hospitals.
The adviser said: "It took 54 years to prepare an accurate list of genuine freedom fighters from the 1971 Liberation War. However, the interim government has finalized the list of martyred and injured participants of the July uprising within just seven to eight months."
He remarked that this reflects the sincerity and sense of responsibility of the government.
"The government is also working on rehabilitation programs to ensure that the injured can pursue employment or business according to their capacity," he added.
"A separate directorate has already been established for the rehabilitation of the July warriors," the adviser said.
"Located on the ninth floor of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, the directorate is staffed by 20 officers under the leadership of an additional secretary, and works exclusively for the interests of the July warriors."
"Recognized July warriors will receive both a one-time grant and a monthly allowance based on their assigned category," said Faruk.
The uprising martyrs are being officially recognized as July martyrs and the injured as July warriors.
Three categories
Category A will receive Tk20,000 per month
Category B will get Tk15,000 per month
Category C warriors are to receive Tk10,000 per month
- Certificates and ID cards are being issued accordingly
According to the adviser, a gazette notification listing 834 July martyrs has been published.
Each martyr’s family will receive a one-time payment of Tk30 lakh. Of this amount, Tk10 lakh has already been disbursed during the 2024–25 fiscal year via National Savings Certificates.
The remaining Tk20 lakh will be provided in July of the 2025–26 fiscal year, also through National Savings Certificates.
Additionally, each martyr’s family will receive Tk20,000 per month as allowance.
Able members of these families will receive priority for employment in government and semi-government sectors.
Category A includes those who, even after medical treatment, cannot live without assistance—such as individuals who have lost both eyes or sustained severe physical impairments preventing independent mobility.
There are 493 people in this category. They are entitled to a one-time payment of Tk5 lakh and a monthly allowance of Tk20,000. Of this, Tk2 lakh has already been disbursed, and the remaining Tk3 lakh will be given next month.
They will also receive lifelong treatment at government hospitals, medical services in local or foreign hospitals upon recommendation by a certified medical board, training for employment, rehabilitation support, and identity cards.
Seven of the most critically injured have already been sent to Turkey for treatment, and others have received care in countries like Thailand.
Category B includes 908 individuals who have sustained serious injuries—such as the loss of an eye or a leg—but are still able to manage basic mobility.
They will receive a one-time grant of Tk3 lakh, of which Tk1 lakh has already been paid via bank cheque during the 2024–25 fiscal year. The remaining Tk2 lakh will be disbursed next month.
These warriors will also receive Tk15,000 per month, along with employment training, priority access to government and semi-government jobs, and identity cards.
Those who have recovered after treatment fall under Category C. The adviser said 10,642 individuals have been listed in this category. Each has received a one-time grant of Tk1 lakh and will begin receiving a monthly allowance of Tk10,000 from next month. They will also receive rehabilitation benefits and identity cards.
To honour the July uprising, the government has decided to observe August 5 every year as July Uprising Day. It will be recognized as a national day and observed with due significance in the years ahead.
