nspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said a certain group does not want stability in the country and is actively attempting to disrupt it.
"This is quite a natural occurrence. There may also be political motives behind it," the police chief said in response to a journalist’s question at the Rajshahi Primary Teachers Training Institute on Monday morning.
Addressing the current law enforcement strategy, the IGP said: “Ordinary criminals may assume that the authorities will apprehend them and bring them before the court, without taking further action. However, our approach, in line with the government's commitment, is to ensure human rights while effectively controlling crime.”
Regarding a recent incident in which a businessman was shot and robbed of gold in the capital, he said: “Similar incidents occurred not only last night but the night before as well.
“In response to the situation, we decided on Saturday morning to launch a joint patrol program involving the RAB, anti-terrorism unit and DMP. We will assess whether this initiative brings improvement; otherwise, we will have to adopt alternative measures.”
The IGP pointed out that crime patterns in Dhaka differ from those in the rest of the country due to the city’s unique topography.
“We seek your (journalists’) cooperation. Please keep us informed. We are also gathering information from social media. We are hopeful that the situation will improve,” he added.
When questioned about the absence of major criminals being apprehended in Operation Devil Hunt, the IGP responded: “Take a look at who is being arrested—smugglers, drug dealers, and especially offenders at the district level.”
