Adviser Sakhawat: Mobile courts to increase on rivers to enhance maritime safety

Brigadier General (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the Ministry of Shipping and the Ministry of Labour and Employment, announced that mobile courts on rivers would be increased to enhance maritime safety.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, after the second session of the Deputy Commissioners' (DC) Conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital, he emphasized the importance of river security and navigability.

"Our country relies heavily on rivers, with two-thirds of the population dependent on them for fishing, transportation, and trade. The DCs have raised concerns regarding river navigability, maritime safety, ports, and terminals. We are addressing these issues and have directed them to strengthen mobile court operations on the rivers," he said.

Regarding labor issues, the adviser mentioned that the ministry is actively working to eliminate child labor and rehabilitate affected children.

"The Ministry of Labour has already undertaken several projects, which we have communicated to them. If further issues arise, we have encouraged them to reach out to us," he added.

On labor unrest, Dr Sakhawat Hossain stressed that identifying and addressing problems falls under the jurisdiction of the authorities.

"You are responsible for recognizing the problems, initiating discussions and implementing solutions. You are the government and it is your duty to act. We are here to support you," he said.

Responding to a query about illegal sand extraction, he acknowledged receiving reports of unauthorized sand mining in Manikganj and Munshiganj.

"I have instructed the DCs of these districts to take necessary action and they have done so. Similarly, I have advised the DC of Comilla regarding the Meghna River," he noted.

When asked about the Election Commission, he clarified its role, saying that it does not conduct elections directly but rather provides policies, frameworks, and supervision.

"Once an election date is announced, the commission has no legal authority to intervene further. The responsibility then shifts to the returning officers," he explained, expressing optimism for a well-conducted upcoming election.
