Police verification may be removed from passport checks

Police verification may be removed in the process of issuing and renewing passports. This information was revealed in a meeting held at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday.

Earlier, to address passport-related complexities, a meeting was held at the secretariat under the chairmanship of Senior Secretary Dr Nasimul Gani of the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday morning.

The main basis for issuing passports is the national identity card and birth registration. If these two documents are accurate, there should be no hindrance in issuing a passport, which was the opinion expressed during a meeting of the Advisory Council.

Following this, the Security Services Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs began working on this matter.

Sources have said that discussions on this issue have advanced significantly during the meeting. Another meeting is expected to be held later. Most of the representatives in the meeting expressed their opinion in favour of removing the verification process from passports.

It was also revealed that the meeting resulted in the formulation of necessary recommendations to resolve passport-related complications. A decision will be finalized based on the guidelines of the Advisory Council, and an order will be issued regarding the matter.

Representatives from the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, the Police Special Branch, and other relevant departments were present at the meeting.

Attendees included Saifulah Panna, secretary of the Chief Adviser’s Office, Sheikh Abu Taher, secretary of the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Mohammad Ruhul Amin, secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and Major General Nurul Anwar, Director-General of the Department of Immigration and Passports, among others.
