Govt forms selection committee for ACC chairman, commissioner appointments

The government has established a five-member selection committee tasked with recommending appointments for the positions of chairman and commissioners of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The committee is chaired by Justice Md Rezaul Haque, a member of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

An order was issued by the Cabinet Division on Sunday, officially forming the committee under Section 7 of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, to assist in selecting new leadership for the ACC.

The committee members include Justice Farah Mahbub from the High Court Division, Comptroller and Auditor General Md Nurul Islam, Professor Dr Mobasser Monem, chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), and former cabinet secretary Md Mahbub Hossain.

For each vacant position, the committee will recommend two candidates based on the majority decision of at least three members.

The list of recommended candidates will then be forwarded to the president for final approval, as per Section 6 of the ACC Act.

To reach a decision, a minimum of four committee members must be present for the selection process.

The Cabinet Division will provide necessary secretarial support to facilitate the committee’s work.

Under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act of 2004, the ACC consists of three commissioners, with one serving as the Chairman. Each commissioner is appointed for a five-year term.

The positions of ACC Chairman Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, Commissioner (Investigation) Md Zahurul Haque, and Commissioner (Inquiry) Mosammat Asiya Khatun became vacant following their resignation on October 29.

All three officials were appointed during the previous tenure of the Awami League government.
