Sheikh Hasina sworn in for historic 5th term

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina took oath as the prime minister for the historic fifth time as well as her consecutive fourth term on Thursday.

The elder daughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, now at 77, becomes the longest serving female head of government in the world.

PM Hasina has been leading the party since 1981 when she returned home from India where she was living a self-exiled life since August 1975. She became the prime minister for the first time in 1996.

The premier was given a standing ovation by the guests at Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban as she was sworn in by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at 7:06pm.

The president's spouse, Dr Rebecca Sultana, PM Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana and other family members witnessed the ceremony, which was conducted by Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain.

Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, Judges, senior politicians, lawyers, senior journalists, diplomats and other dignitaries, among others, were present on the occasion where around 1,400 guests were invited.
