Legal notice served to cabinet secretary to ensure safe rail lines

A legal notice has been served to five people, including Cabinet Secretary Shafiul Alam, asking them to ensure the security of  rail lines by installing barbed wires and appointing gatemen at all rail crossings in Bangladesh.

Others respondents are secretaries of Rail Ministry and the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Developments and Co-operatives, director general of Bangladesh Railway, and the inspector general of police (IGP). 

Supreme Court lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan served the notice by post on Tuesday, and said if necessary action is not taken within 72 hours, the respondents will face legal action.

The notice cited, recently, many accidents were occurring in crossings of rail lines. However, among the total 1,412 crossings, 466 have gatemen. 

According to statistics published by Buet, 244 people died in 235 accidents in 2018. A further 228 were also severely injured.
