The United States has regretted that Bangladesh has not supported Ukraine on Crimea issue.
“It is clear that the international community does not accept the occupation or the annexation, I should say by Russia of Crimea and I regret that Bangladesh was not able to join the majority on that important issue,” US ambassador in Dhaka Dan Mozena said at a meet the press programme in the city yesterday.
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday adopted a resolution on Crimea where Bangladesh abstained from voting without explaining the reason.
According to UN website, by a record vote of 100 in favour and 11 against with 58 abstentions, including Bangladesh, the UNGA adopted the resolution titled “Territorial integrity of Ukraine”.
Russian ambassador in Dhaka Alexander Nicholaev at a programme on Sunday expressed his satisfaction that Bangladesh abstained from voting when the resolution was adopted.
He also thanked China and India for their support to Russia and claimed that joining of Crimea with Russia is not an ‘annexed’ issue rather a reunification issue.
The citizens of Crimea chose to be a part of Russia and the West is playing a double standard in this regard, the Russian ambassador said.
The non-binding text said a part of Ukraine had been forcibly annexed by a state and urged other states, international organisations and specialised agencies not to recognise any change in the status of Crimea or the Black Sea port city of Sevastopol and to refrain from actions or dealings that might be interpreted as such.
