Maldives closes Dhaka mission

The Maldives mission will close its operations in Bangladesh from Monday for “budget constraint” after six years of operation in the country.

“The Maldives officials have informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the closure,” a foreign ministry official said seeking anonymity.

He added: “They are closing down because of a budget constraint,” he said. “Maldives will continue to operate in Bangladesh from their mission in New Delhi.”

Their ambassador in New Delhi will concurrently accredit for Bangladesh, he added.

He also mentioned: “Any coordination with the Maldives government will be handled through their New Delhi mission. We will contact their Delhi mission from now on.”

When contacted, the Embassy of Maldives said their officials were busy packing up.

Bangladesh and Maldives are both members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).
