Bimstec approves permanent secretariat in Dhaka

Top leaders of the seven-member regional forum Bimstec yesterday officially approved the establishment of its permanent secretariat in Bangladesh.

The member countries of Bimstec (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) inked a memorandum of understanding regard in Nay Pyi Taw of Myanmar yesterday.

Heads of states and governments from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand Prime Minister’s special envoy took part in the summit.

They also thanked Bangladesh for providing the premises for the Bimstec Secretariat in Dhaka and also expressed satisfaction at the progress made towards the activities of the secretariat.

The summit adopted a declaration after the summit meeting. The forum also expressed contentment at the cooperation between law enforcement agencies of member countries in combating terrorism and transnational crimes.
