Ban Ki-moon calls PM

Hours after US Secretary of State John Kerry’s phone call, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday afternoon.

The UN chief discussed the country’s current political situation with the premier, a top official of the foreign ministry said.

Moon also discussed the ongoing violence over the issues of polls and pending execution of Jamaat-e-Islami leader Abdul Quader Molla, added the official.

The UN secretary general condemned the ongoing violence and hoped this type of acts will be stopped immediately.

During talking, Moon also hoped that Bangladesh would hold its next election as per the Constitution, said PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad.

Earlier in the day, United States Secretary of State John Kerry called Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and also discussed the current events in Bangladesh.

The conversation came at a time when United Nations’ Assistant Secretary General Oscar Fernandez-Taranco is mediating talks between the two main political parties in Bangladesh to break political deadlock over holding the next general polls with the participation of all political parties.

Earlier in the day, the US embassy in Dhaka issued a statement where it said “goodwill” will lead to a free, fair and credible elections.
