Bangladesh to showcase jute products at COP31 in Turkiye

The government plans to showcase Bangladesh’s traditional jute and jute-made products at the UN climate conference COP31 in Turkiye to promote them in international markets.

A special exhibition of Bangladeshi jute products is planned at the Bangladesh pavilion during the conference, scheduled to take place in Antalya from November 9 to 20.

The initiative aims to promote jute as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic and highlight the commercial potential of Bangladesh’s jute industry.

Preparations are underway to display a range of jute products and related technologies at the pavilion. An exhibition display has been set up at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the preparations.

The exhibition will showcase products such as jute bags, home décor items and handicrafts to international buyers, investors and policymakers.

Stakeholders believe growing global awareness of environmental pollution and the need for alternatives to plastic presents an opportunity to expand international markets for jute products.

As a natural, renewable and biodegradable fibre, jute has significant potential in environmentally friendly production and consumption.

At a meeting at the Foreign Ministry on October 15, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam highlighted the potential of Bangladesh’s jute industry during discussions on preparations for COP31 with climate experts and relevant stakeholders. The meeting emphasised promoting jute as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic.

If implemented, the initiative could help showcase the diverse uses of jute, explore new markets and strengthen commercial ties with foreign buyers, while bringing Bangladesh’s traditional “golden fibre” industry into the international spotlight.
