The Embassy of Nepal in Dhaka has appealed to individuals, organisations and institutions in Bangladesh for voluntary financial contributions to support victims of the devastating August 26 flash floods, opening a dedicated bank account to channel assistance.
The appeal comes after the floods along Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers caused widespread loss of life and property, leaving many people injured, missing and severely affected.
The August 26 disaster was triggered after a massive collapse of glacial ice and rock sent debris into the Lhende Khola, unleashing a destructive surge through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems and sweeping through settlements and critical infrastructure downstream.
As of Wednesday, 1,367 bodies had been recovered in Nepal, while 5,132 people remained officially listed as missing, including around 589 foreign tourists, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
Only 102 of the recovered bodies had so far been identified and handed over to their families.
In a notice issued on September 8 titled “Together for Nepal: An Appeal for Voluntary Contributions to Support Flash Flood Victims,” the embassy said it had received an outpouring of solidarity and offers of assistance from the Bangladesh government, members of the public, institutions and other friends and well-wishers of Nepal.
With inquiries growing over how people in Bangladesh could contribute to the relief effort, the embassy said it had established a dedicated account for voluntary donations.
“We invite interested individuals, organizations and institutions in Bangladesh to join hands with the people of Nepal in this time of need,” the embassy said.
“Every contribution, big or small, will be deeply appreciated.”
According to the notice, contributions can be deposited with Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC under the account name “Embassy of Nepal, Dhaka,” account number 1000028629, at its Gulshan branch.
The appeal adds a public fundraising channel to the assistance already extended by Bangladesh following the catastrophe.
The Bangladesh government earlier contributed $1 million to the Nepal Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund to support ongoing relief, recovery and humanitarian operations following the floods and landslides.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had also expressed condolences over the loss of life and offered Bangladesh’s assistance to Nepal, while the National Parliament adopted a condolence motion over the disaster.
The Nepal Embassy said the dedicated account was opened specifically in response to increasing requests from Bangladeshis seeking ways to help those affected.
The August 26 disaster caused extensive damage across northern Nepal, destroying homes, roads, bridges and other infrastructure and leaving communities struggling with the consequences of one of the country’s most severe recent natural disasters.
The embassy said those seeking further information about making contributions could contact its designated officials.
The latest appeal now gives individuals and organisations in Bangladesh a direct avenue to join the government-level response and contribute to Nepal’s recovery effort.
