President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Thursday called upon Bangladeshi business people living abroad to further contribute to the country’s development by investing their money and making efforts to bring more foreign investment in the country.
The president made the call when a delegation of Bangladeshi expatriates living in the United Kingdom paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon, President’s Press Wing sources said.
Led by UK-based prominent businessman Kamal Uddin, the delegation congratulated Mirza Fakrul on assuming the office of the president.
The president gratefully recalled immense contribution of the expatriates to the movement for establishing democracy and justice in the country through investing their money, labour and intellect, saying “the country and its people would always remember your contribution and role.”
The president also expressed gratitude to the expatriates, noting that their remittances are one of the major driving forces of the country’s economy.
During the meeting, the delegation sought the president’s support to enhance business opportunities and civic facilities for them, including addressing the issue of harassment in the airports. They also urged for ensuring their voting rights in the country.
President Fakhrul Islam said, the government has already started working to resolve these problems and enhance civic facilities for the expatriates.
"Probashi Card has been introduced to ensure comprehensive service facilities and benefits for the expatriates,” he said.
He also urged expat Bangladeshis to invest more in the country, contribute to employment generation, education, healthcare, technology and skill development and other social welfare activities.
The delegation expressed interest in investing in the country.
President’s military secretary and press secretary were present at the meeting.
