India does not support remarks made by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina at a virtual press conference in New Delhi regarding Bangladesh’s current legitimate and newly formed government, the Indian government has said.
Responding on Friday to Bangladesh’s reaction to the August 5 press conference organized in Delhi by the Foreign Correspondents of South Asia, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the Indian government had no role in organizing the event.
“We had already made our position clear regarding the event. I am reiterating that position. The government had no role in the event organized by a private media organization,” Jaiswal said.
He further said the Indian government does not support anything that was said on the platform, particularly remarks concerning Bangladesh’s duly constituted government.
Jaiswal was also asked whether India supports concerns expressed by Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy over the current situation in Bangladesh.
In response, he said New Delhi was keeping a close watch on developments in its neighborhood.
“We are keeping a close watch on all developments in our immediate neighborhood, particularly on issues related to our national security, and whatever necessary steps are required will be taken,” he said.
Earlier, on Tuesday (August 4), Jaiswal had said, in response to a question about the event, that the Indian government had no involvement whatsoever in Sheikh Hasina’s participation in a virtual event scheduled for August 5.
