State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Thursday said Bangladesh expects India to address promptly and peacefully the concerns of its people, being the world’s largest democracy.
"As a democratic government and state, we would expect India, as the world's largest democracy, to take into account the position of its people and move quickly towards resolving the problem," she told a media briefing at the foreign office.
The junior minister made the comments while responding to a question on the current student-led protests in the neighbouring country, adding “Bangladesh wants peace and stability to prevail in the region”.
Asked for comments on media reports about President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s alleged telephone conversation with deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, she said the foreign ministry had not yet any specific information on the matter.
Shama, however, said the government would investigate the matter if any relevant information became available.
