State mourning on Wednesday for former Qatari emir

Bangladesh will observe a day of state mourning on Wednesday following the death of former Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

During the mourning period, the national flag will be flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government and autonomous institutions, educational institutions, and Bangladesh missions abroad. A condolence motion has also been adopted in Parliament in his honour.

The information was announced in a Cabinet Division notification issued on Tuesday.

According to the notification signed by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani, special prayers will be offered at mosques across the country, seeking forgiveness for the departed soul. Similar prayers will also be held at other places of worship.

On Tuesday, Parliament unanimously adopted a condolence motion on the death of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

The motion was placed by Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and passed by voice vote under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal.

Meanwhile, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has travelled to Doha to convey Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's condolences over the death of the former Qatari emir.
