Foreign minister: Bangladesh-China ties reach highest level

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on Saturday said Bangladesh's relations with China have been elevated to the highest level of bilateral cooperation through the establishment of a Bangladesh-China community with a shared future.

"This is the highest step in terms of China's bilateral engagement," the foreign minister said while describing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's just-concluded visits to Malaysia and China.

He said photos and videos from the prime minister's visits reflected the importance attached to Bangladesh by both Malaysia and China, further strengthening Dhaka's ties with Kuala Lumpur and Beijing.

The foreign minister said the leaders of Bangladesh and China agreed to build a Bangladesh-China community with a shared future in the new era.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, Prime Minister's Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kabir, BIDA Executive Chairman Ashik Chowdhury, Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the media briefing.

Adviser Humaiun Kabir said the two sides signed a party-to-party Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a formal partnership aimed at strengthening political cooperation.

Bangladesh and China also agreed to deepen cooperation in integrated water resources management, water resources planning, hydrological forecasting, flood prevention and disaster reduction, river dredging, and related technology sharing.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned home from Beijing on Friday after wrapping up his maiden overseas trip to Malaysia and China.
