The government is aiming to reset relations with India, moving away from the trajectory followed during former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir said on Monday.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat.
“The kind of relations that existed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure will no longer continue. That chapter is over,” the adviser said.
He added that the meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. Importing diesel through pipelines from India was discussed as a priority issue.
“If positive relations are maintained, many challenges can be resolved. We are hopeful about advancing energy imports through pipelines,” he said.
Humayun Kabir also said that a delegation, including Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, will visit India on Tuesday to attend the upcoming Indian Ocean Conference.
During the visit, meetings are expected with India’s foreign minister and security officials, where key bilateral issues—such as border killings and other pending matters—will be discussed, he added.
