Foreign minister, adviser to visit Türkiye to seek UN votes

Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and the Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir are set to visit Türkiye to seek support for Bangladesh’s candidate in the election for the president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

They are scheduled to leave Dhaka for Ankara on Friday.

During the visit, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman will hold a bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, according to sources at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Officials from the ministry said the primary objective of the visit is to campaign for Bangladesh’s candidacy for the presidency of the 81st UN General Assembly. However, bilateral meetings have also been scheduled during the tour.

The Bangladeshi delegation will be led by the foreign minister. Officials said several issues of mutual interest are likely to be discussed during the bilateral talks. The meeting with the Turkish foreign minister is scheduled for Saturday. After completing the campaign activities, the foreign minister is expected to return to the country on Monday.

It may be noted that after assuming office, Khalilur Rahman made his first foreign visit to Saudi Arabia, where he attended an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Jeddah on the Palestine issue. Most recently, he attended the Commonwealth ministerial meeting in London, where Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir also accompanied him.
