Former United States Ambassador to Bangladesh William B Milam has passed away. He was 89.
The information was released through an official post on the verified Facebook page of the U.S. Embassy around 10:51am on Thursday.
John F. Danilovich, former United States Deputy Ambassador to Bangladesh, announced in a verified post on X on Wednesday that William B Milam passed away on Tuesday.
In a Facebook post, the US Embassy in Dhaka stated that Ambassador Milam’s dedicated leadership and service from 1990 to 1993 significantly strengthened bilateral relations between the United States and Bangladesh.
The post highlighted William B Milam’s pivotal role in organizing ‘Operation Sea Angel’, which was instrumental in saving thousands of lives following the devastating 1991 cyclone and floods in Bangladesh.
It added that even after completing his tenure as U.S. ambassador, Milam continued to work actively to strengthen ties between the United States and Bangladesh.
The current U.S. Ambassador to Dhaka, Brent T. Christensen, expressed his condolences, saying, “I personally witnessed his sincere efforts. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and all those who had the privilege of working with him.”
William B Milam was the editor of the U.S.-based quarterly opinion journal South Asia Perspectives. He also served as president of the U.S.-based human rights organization Right to Freedom and was a senior scholar at the Washington, D.C.-based think tank, the Wilson Center.
