Dhaka seeks details on Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia

The government has requested detailed information on 36 Bangladeshis detained in the country on suspicion of militant involvement, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said on Monday.

Malaysia has deported some of the 36 Bangladeshis. At least three of them have been taken into custody.

Touhid said they were deported due to overstaying their visas.

Speaking to journalists, the adviser said: “They have been sent back. The reason appears to be different... they overstayed for a few days or something like that.”

“A small number of them might have been involved in militant activities. We are seeking detailed information about that, and we have also informed them (Malaysia) that we will fully cooperate if they are indeed involved in such activities,” he added.

Touhid is scheduled to visit Malaysia this week to attend the Asean Regional Forum.

When asked whether this issue will be discussed during the visit, he said: “This is not related to the forum. But if the opportunity arises, I will raise the matter.”
