Shafiqul: Tulip’s letter to Yunus received

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has confirmed that a letter from British MP Tulip Siddiq, the niece of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, requesting a meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, has been received.

Speaking at the Bangladesh High Commission in London on Tuesday, Shafiqul stated that any reply to the letter would be issued “through legal channels.”

He said it was a legal issue and would be addressed legally, reports UNB.

Yunus is currently on a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom.

In her message, Tulip expressed interest in meeting with him during his stay, hoping the discussion would help dispel “misunderstandings” regarding corruption allegations against her.

She invited Yunus to join her for lunch or afternoon tea at the House of Commons to talk over the matter.

Reports about Tulip’s letter surfaced in most Bangladeshi media outlets on Sunday, just a day before Yunus’s visit to the UK commenced.

Later that day, Shafiqul said the government had not yet received any official communication from Tulip.

Previously, The Guardian reported that Tulip had formally requested a meeting with Dr Yunus during his stay in London.

Meanwhile, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) last week alleged that Tulip – or her mother – had improperly benefited from a 7,200-square-foot land allotment granted during Hasina’s 15-year tenure.
