Dhanmondi 32 house demolition: Dhaka calls Delhi’s remarks unexpected, unwanted

Bangladesh on Sunday responded to India's remarks regarding the demolition of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's Dhanmondi 32 residence, describing them as "unexpected and unwanted."

Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mohammad Rafiqul Alam, while answering a question, also said Bangladesh has witnessed various adverse situations in its neighbouring country but refrained from making official statements on the internal affairs of any state.

Bangladesh expects the same courtesy from others, he added.

Earlier, India condemned the act of vandalism at the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on Wednesday," said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, on Thursday.

He emphasized that all those who value the freedom struggle that nurtured Bangladeshi identity and pride recognize the importance of this residence for the national consciousness of Bangladesh.

The interim government described the vandalism at the Dhanmondi 32 residence as unfortunate and unexpected, attributing it to public anger incited by the "provocative remarks" made by fugitive Sheikh Hasina from India against the July uprising.

In a statement on Thursday, the interim government urged India to ensure that its territory is not used to promote instability in Bangladesh and to prevent Hasina from making further remarks.
