Envoy: India takes long-term view of its relations with Bangladesh

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has emphasized India’s long-term commitment to its relationship with Bangladesh, asserting that the peace, security, progress, and prosperity of the two nations are deeply interconnected.

Speaking at the Bay of Bengal Conversations, organized by the Centre for Governance Studies in Dhaka on Sunday, Verma said: “India takes a long-term view of its relations with Bangladesh and believes that the peace, security, progress, and prosperity of the two countries are interlinked.”

Highlighting the importance of India-Bangladesh ties, the high commissioner stressed the need for "a stable, positive, and constructive relationship" in which the people of both countries are the key stakeholders.

He pointed to continued progress in trade, transport, energy connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges as hallmarks of the partnership. “The reality of our interdependence and mutual benefit will keep reasserting itself, regardless of political changes,” he said.

Verma cited key milestones achieved this month, including the launch of 40MW power transmission from Nepal to Bangladesh through the Indian grid and the expansion of infrastructure at the Petrapole-Benapole Integrated Check Post, as examples of ongoing collaboration.

The high commissioner also described India-Bangladesh cooperation as a cornerstone of regional integration under frameworks like BIMSTEC.

Reaffirming India’s commitment, Verma said: “We are dedicated to working together with the government and people of Bangladesh to fulfil our shared aspirations for peace, security, and development, ensuring that our partnership continues to benefit the common people on both sides.”
