US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller on Thursday said that the United States wants to see religious freedom respected in Bangladesh and accountability for any attacks.
"We have, in our discussions with Bangladeshi officials, made clear that we want to see freedom of religion respected," he said.
Miller said that they want to see individuals held accountable for any attacks, as appropriate under Bangladeshi law.
He added that this position applies not only to Bangladesh but to any country in the world.
Meanwhile, India has called on Bangladesh’s interim government to take action against extremist elements and ensure the safety of Hindus.
“We again urge the government of Bangladesh to take strong measures to ensure the safety of Hindus and to act against extremist elements,” Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said during a regular briefing in New Delhi on Thursday.
He noted recent attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, saying: “This is bound to create further tension within the community.”
