Nahid: Govt’s key focus is to attract foreign investors for job creation

Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Adviser Md Nahid Islam on Sunday said that the interim government is working to create a suitable environment to attract foreign companies to invest in Bangladesh, with the aim of generating more job opportunities.

“The interim government is trying to create a favorable environment to attract various foreign companies to invest in Bangladesh so that employment opportunities can be generated through this investment,” he said.

Nahid Islam, adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, said this during a meeting with South Korean Ambassador Park Young-Sik at his office in the Posts and Telecommunications Division, according to a press release.

He also said that reform programs are underway in the state, including economic reforms.

Ambassador Park Young-Sik said that South Korea is the fourth largest investor in Bangladesh, with companies like Samsung and LG having significant investments in the country.

However, he pointed out that their businesses are being affected by rising production costs due to higher tax rates.

The ambassador recommended stopping illegal mobile phones by implementing the National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) and expressed a desire to establish a joint venture with Bangladesh in this regard.

The adviser informed him that tax issues are related to the National Board of Revenue and will be considered in the process of economic reforms to ensure that no one suffers as a result.

ICT Division Secretary Shish Haider Chowdhury said that they aim to encourage local manufacturing industries and that all necessary measures would be taken to support this goal.

Posts and Telecommunications Secretary Dr Md Mushfiqur Rahman urged the ambassador to invest in the government organization Telephone Shilpa Sangstha Limited.

Deputy Chief of Mission Jin-hee Baek, Samsung Bangladesh Country Manager Hwansung Woo, and other concerned officials were present at the meeting.
