Envoy: India prioritizing student visa issuance for Bangladesh amid limitations

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma has said India is prioritizing the issuance of visas for students who want to go to New Delhi to apply for third-country visas, despite limitations.

"We are prioritizing them," he said while replying to a question after his meeting with Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin at the foreign ministry on Sunday.

"We are trying to get visas to people who need it most urgently," he said, adding that their manpower has been reduced due to the ongoing situation.

He said that in emergency categories, besides medical visas, students who need them are getting priority.

Earlier, he met with the foreign secretary as part of a regular exchange of views.

"Of course, when we talk, we talk about all sorts of issues and the entire gamut of the relationship," he said.

"We are keen to have stable, positive and constructive relationships, and we strongly believe that our cooperation should benefit common people on both sides and should be aligned with our national priorities," he said.

"We also want to strengthen our interlinkages."

Both sides are also discussing holding regular foreign secretary-level talks under Foreign Office Consultations.

The high commissioner also added that they did not discuss anything specific to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in India since August 5.

The foreign ministry later said in a statement that bilateral issues featured during the meeting include: the status of the return of the Indian workforce to Bangladesh who had been engaged in a few LOC projects; the status of Indian visa operations; the renewal of the Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA); early consular access for Indian Fishermen who were detained in Bangladesh last week; repatriation of Bangladeshi fishermen who were detained by the Indian authorities in mid-September; holding of meetings of regular bilateral mechanisms including the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC).
