A total of 200 members of the Bangladesh Navy's Force Marine Unit (BANFMU-9), deployed in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Juba, South Sudan, have been honored with UN Peacekeeping Medals.
The medal parade took place on Tuesday at the BANFMU-9 contingent camp, with Lieutenant General Mohan Subramaniam, force commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), serving as the chief guest.
In his remarks, Lieutenant General Subramaniam lauded the Bangladesh Navy personnel for their exceptional courage and skill in conducting operations under the difficult conditions of the Nile River and conflict-affected areas.
He highlighted their crucial role in transporting fuel, food, and other supplies for the United Nations, as well as their successful completion of 50 logistics operations across 1,300 kilometers of the Nile.
The Bangladesh Navy contingent has also been instrumental in performing patrols, reconnaissance, rescue, and diving operations, while ensuring the security of river transport for UN agencies in the region.
The force commander expressed his appreciation to the Bangladesh Navy and the Government of Bangladesh for their unwavering support in global peacekeeping.
Since 2015, the Bangladesh Navy has been the sole marine force in UNMISS, contributing significantly to peace and development in South Sudan.
Their efforts have earned praise not only for their operational success but also for fostering stability in the region.
In addition to their peacekeeping role in South Sudan, the Bangladesh Navy’s warship, BNS Sangram, is proudly representing the country in international waters, contributing to global peace initiatives, particularly in the Mediterranean Sea.
