Chief Adviser of the interim government of Bangladesh Dr Muhammad Yunus has sought assistance from the British High Commissioner Sarah Cook to bring back the money laundered in the United Kingdom.
The head of the interim government met the British High Commissioner and the Japanese ambassador at his official residence on Wednesday.
Later, Press Secretary of the chief adviser Shafiqul Alam briefed the journalists at the Foreign Service Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
While talking with the journalist Shafiqul Alam said: "Dr Yunus asked for help from the British high commissioner to bring back the money smuggled out of the country. A substantial amount of money has been laundered in Britain, and cooperation from the High Commissioner has been requested to bring back the money.”
The press secretary of the chief adviser said: "One of the goals of the current interim government is to bring back the money stolen and smuggled abroad that has destroyed the country's economy. Additionally, this government is focused on attracting foreign investment.”
“Bangladesh will move forward under the leadership of Dr Yunus. The economy of Bangladesh will be stronger. Funds are required to rebuild the country and that is why cooperation has been sought from Japan and Britain.”
“Education and fundamental rights of Rohingyas were also discussed. Japan and Britain have assured cooperation,” told the press secretary.
He also said that a commission would be formed to determine how many people were killed in the July-August mass uprising
"These are being discussed in the cabinet,” he added.
Chief Advisers Press Secretary also said that Bangladesh is set to sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance as this matter was discussed during a meeting of the Advisory Council of the interim government.
Mentioning the government’s commitment to investigate all cases of enforced disappearance Shafiqul said the signing could occur before August 30.
“A National Security Adviser will be appointed soon, and there is ongoing discussion about forming a commission to address cases of disappearances,” he added further.
Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir was also present at the media briefing.
