India-Bangladesh plans to launch friendship satellite

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced plans to launch a joint India-Bangladesh satellite to give bilateral cooperation in the space sector a boost.

He said “India-Bangladesh Maitree Satellite” will give a new dimension to bilateral cooperation.

He announced the project after he met with visiting Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday.

Both leaders delivered press statements where they shared their plans for the future of the two close and trusted neighbours.

An MoU between the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACE) and the Department of Space, Government of the Republic of India and Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology, Government of Bangladesh was also signed for Collaboration on a Joint Small Satellite Project.

Both sides decided to take several steps that can improve trade and people-to-people connectivity.

Prime Minister Modi announced an e-medical visa facility as hundreds of thousands of Bangladeshis travel to India for treatment.

India will take the initiative to open a new Assistant High Commission in Rangpur for the convenience of the people of the North West region of Bangladesh.

He said an internal container depot will also be set up in Bangladesh's northern Sirajganj district to help promote greater trade between the countries.
