Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghen has said that Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pledged support for the modernization of the agriculture sector of his country and will direct private investors from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka.
Wickremesinghen disclosed this in a tweet following his meeting with the prime minister in New Delhi on Monday during Indian PM Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony.
"We discussed strengthening Sri Lanka-Bangladesh relations, regional cooperation, and potential investments," he said.
"She pledged support for Sri Lanka’s agricultural modernization and will direct private investors from Bangladesh to Sri Lanka.”
"I committed to sending Sri Lankan agricultural experts to study Bangladesh’s methods," he said.
"We also talked about a free trade agreement and a potential passenger ferry service between our countries. She invited me to the BIMSTEC Summit, but due to elections Prime Minister Gunawardena and the Foreign Minister will attend representing me.
"She expressed satisfaction with Sri Lanka’s economic progress, and I assured a visit to Bangladesh after the elections," read the President's tweet.
