BGB pushes back boat carrying 65 Rohingyas

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have pushed back a boat carrying Rohingyas while they attempted to cross the Naf River from Myanmar to infiltrate into Bangladesh.

There were 65 Rohingya men (Myanmar citizens) on that boat.

They were returned from the zero line adjacent to Damdamia in Hnila union of Teknaf Upazila of Cox's Bazar around 2pm on Tuesday.

BGB Director General Maj Gen Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui confirmed the matter.

“Some 65 Rohingyas, who tried to enter the country by a boat, were sent back,” said the newly appointed BGB chief.

He said while talking to reporters after paying tribute at the mausoleum of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on Tuesday.

He also said that security forces are actively working to ensure that no Rohingya people would be allowed to enter Bangladesh anymore.

“The border situation is now under control and we are trying to deal with the situation as humanely as possible while maintaining international relations,” said the BGB DG.

Until Monday night, 115 Myanmar forces had taken shelter in Bangladesh and 114 security personnel arrived till Tuesday morning while 35 more entered in the afternoon, he said.

So far, a total of 264 Myanmar security personnel have surrendered, added the BGB DG.

“We have given shelter and food to them. Among them 15 were injured. Eight of them were undergoing treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital and Chittagong Medical College and Hospital," he said.

Two people including a Bangladeshi woman were killed following an explosion of a mortar shell on Monday, he said, adding: “Such deaths can’t be acceptable.”

Amid the ongoing tension in Myanmar, a sense of anxiety grips the Bangladeshi nationals residing near the border in Bandarban.

Many of them have evacuated their homes, seeking refuge in neighboring villages or staying with relatives for safety.

Earlier in the day, a case was filed over the death of two people - a Bangladeshi woman and a Rohingya man - who were killed after a mortar shell, reportedly fired by Myanmar, fell on the Ghumdum border in Bandarban on Monday.

Meanwhile, a mortar shell from Myanmar landed across the border in Bandarban's Ghumdum union and hit the window of a house Tuesday morning.
