India detains 9 Bangladeshis for alleged human trafficking involvement

Indian police claim to have detained 10 people, including nine Bangladeshis, on allegations of being involved in human trafficking in Gujarat, India.

Among the detainees, three are women, Surat Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Tomar said at a press conference on Monday.

He said: “We detained several Bangladeshis who had entered India illegally. The accused were allegedly involved in human trafficking.”

“The accused used to bring men and women from Bangladesh to India by luring them with jobs and money. Bangladeshi women were brought to India and forced to work at various spa centres and do sex work,” the police officer further said.

They used to create fake documents to make them appear as Indian citizens, he said.

Indian police seized various fake Indian documents from the possession of the detainees, including Aadhaar cards, Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards, mobile phones, Bangladeshi currency, laminated copies of Bangladeshi NID cards and driving licences.

A person named Akash Sanjay Bhai Mankar, who lives in Vadodara, Gujarat, created the documents using Photoshop. That man was also detained.

Surat Police's Special Operation Group (SOG) and Prevention of Crime Branch (PCB) have launched an investigation into the matter.

Seven other cases were filed at different police stations against the detainees.

With the help of these forged documents, the accused also bought a car and two motorbikes with a bank loan in India, police said.
