Envoy: India to stand with Bangladesh like 1971 for prosperity

India stood with the people of Bangladesh in 1971 and will stand with the people of Bangladesh in the future as well on the road to greater prosperity and progress, and in helping them in realizing the vision for stable, prosperous and progressive foundation.

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma made the comment at a Maitri Diwas program on Wednesday night.

"We remain committed to doing more to build on the foundation of friendship that we have, that we are celebrating today. And as we do so, we must also ensure that our future generations imbibed with our shared history and the spirit of 1971," he said.

Maitri Diwas is being celebrated since 2021 on December 6, the day when India recognized Bangladesh 10 days before the Victory in 1971 war of independence. India supported Bangladesh throughout the war.

The high commissioner said December 6 stands out a "very special" and that the relationship between the countries is rooted in "equality, empathy, respect dignity and solidarity."

"Maitri Diwas is in many ways a reminder of how much we are connected with each other based on our shared history, shared geography, shared culture, shared language, shared traditions. It's a reminder that our friendship is rooted in the shared sacrifices of freedom fighters, our veterans and millions more who laid down their lives in the cause of the liberation of Bangladesh," he said.

Currently, he said, it is a multifaceted partnership.

"It's a relationship between the two fast growing economies of the world and it is a relationship built upon growing aspirations of the people, which is creating new frontiers and which is adding new momentum to our engagement," he said.

"This relationship, this partnership, is based on the conviction that our progress and prosperity are interlinked. And this is a relationship where we are building new connectivities."

"We are getting connected in more ways than we were connected earlier. Whether it is physical connection, whether it is people to people connection, digital connection, energy connectivity, economic connectivity.

"The opportunities are really endless as we move forward in carrying this friendship along the path of greater open, greater optimism," he said.
