State Department: US favours no political party in Bangladesh

The US State Department has said that they have made it clear that political violence does not have a place in a democracy and that "the US favors no political party" in Bangladesh.

"We support Bangladesh's goal of holding a free, fair, and peaceful election. And I will note, though, that we've always emphasized the importance of the United States and Bangladesh working together to achieve Bangladesh's goal of free and fair elections. It's an important aspect of our bilateral relationship," Vedant Patel, principal deputy spokesperson, said in the Department's press briefing in Washington.

Patel said they "believe that free and fair elections are a shared priority, and many Bangladeshi Government officials, including the prime minister, have themselves said that it is their goal."

He was asked for the comment about the "summons" of 13 western diplomats in Dhaka for their joint statement on the attacks on Ashraful Alom alias Hero Alom.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, however, said they didn't summon them, they invited them to convey their displeasure over the statement which had "many shortcomings".
