The University of Tokyo in Japan will support the growth of ophthalmology treatment and scientific research in Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Vice Chancellor Prof Md Sharfuddin Ahmed, who is visiting Japan, said on Thursday morning.
Earlier, Md Sharfuddin Ahmed made a courtesy visit to the university on Wednesday at the invitation of Prof Dr Makoto Aihara, director of the department of ophthalmology.
CourtesyDr Tazbir Ahmed, a specialist doctor at the ophthalmology department of BSMMU and PhD fellow at the University of Tokyo, was also present.
Prof Md Sharfuddin Ahmed expressed hope to work in coordination with the University of Tokyo's ophthalmology department, which is ranked 23rd in the international QS ranking, for the development of eye treatment and research in Bangladesh.
At the same time, he hinted at signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aiming to promote experience exchange between BSMMU and Japanese teachers for ensuring up-to-date training of resident doctors.
CourtesyProf Aihara praised Bangladeshi ophthalmologists and shed light on several international-standard articles published by Bangladeshi doctors in recent times.
He put emphasis on clinical research as well as basic research and agreed to provide support in ophthalmology research, upgradation of the residency curriculum and faculty exchange to BSMMU.
Later, Sharfuddin invited Aihara to visit Bangladesh and BSMMU.
The vice chancellor of BSMMU visited the outpatient department, ophthalmology department, research laboratory, cell cultural lab, genetic and animal research centre, medical and general library, canteen, and gymnasium of the university.
