Bangladeshi citizens in Ukraine asked to contact embassy in Poland

The Bangladesh Embassy in Poland has asked Bangladeshi nationals including students to inform them about their situation in Ukraine in light of the ongoing Russian invasion.

On Thursday a notice was issued by the Bangladesh Embassy in Poland, saying: “Expatriate Bangladeshis currently staying in Ukraine are requested to contact the Bangladesh Embassy in Poland as soon as possible.”

Around 20 Bangladeshi families are living in Kyiv.

A day before, the Indian embassy in Ukraine asked their nationals to leave Ukraine at the earliest chance given a fresh wave of hostilities, reports Hindustan times.

In an advisory, the mission also called upon Indian nationals not to travel to the Eastern European country, according to the Indian embassy in Kyiv.

Seeking anonymity, a top Foreign Ministry official on Friday told Dhaka Tribune: “We have been on alert since the beginning of the war. The whole situation is being monitored strictly.”

Responding to a query, the official said the Bangladesh government was ready to provide assistance to and repatriate citizens living in Ukraine.

Recently, Russia boosted its attack using heavy ultra-modern weapons across Ukraine, report CNN and BBC world.

However, there is no readily available data on the number of Bangladeshis residing in Ukraine, which is home to around 42.5 million people. Most Bangladeshis went there for business and others to study.

The Bangladesh Embassy in Poland has already begun collecting information on those who are now in Ukraine. “We’re trying to know about their situation,” said Ambassador Sultana Laila Hossain.

On Friday evening (Bangladesh time), she told Dhaka Tribune that four Bangladeshi nationals went to Ukraine for volunteer work earlier.

She mentioned: “Two nationals out of four left Kyiv under the supervision of Save the Children. They are now in Warsaw. We’re trying to collect data of our nationals and inform the Bangladesh government.”

A Bangladeshi national in Kyiv, told Dhaka Tribune: “We’re in contact with the embassy in Poland. The envoy assured us of assistance.”
