India wants to see its Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to Bangladesh, to attend the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on March 17, as mutually beneficial for both Dhaka and Delhi.
Indian Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla made the remark when new Bangladesh High Commissioner in Delhi Muhammad Imran met him at his office on Friday.
He made it known to the envoy that he planned to visit Dhaka to prepare ground work for Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Bangladesh.
During the meeting, Shringla noted the importance India attaches to the relationship with Bangladesh as its immediate neighbour.
Expressing satisfaction over the excellent bilateral relations, Shringla stressed that the two countries can further promote ties in areas such as defence cooperation, trade and people-to-people contact.
Bangladesh envoy Imran appreciated Shringla’s role in consolidating the bilateral relations between the two countries during his tenure as the high commissioner of India to Bangladesh.
He particularly noted his endeavour in easing visa issuance system, which contributed huge movement of people between the two countries.
Shringla served as the high commissioner of India to Bangladesh from 2015 to 2018 and also served as the head of the Territorial Wing of Bangladesh-Myanmar (BM) Division at the Ministry of External Affairs in India.
Deputy High Commissioner Rokebul Haque accompanied the envoy during the meeting.
