Crackdown on illegal immigrants: 78 Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia

Malaysian authorities have detained 474 people, including 78 Bangladeshis, in a nationwide drive against illegal immigrants.

The authorities also held four employers on allegations of hiring illegal immigrants.

Immigration Department Director General Khairul Dzaimee Daud said 124 enforcement operations were conducted since January 1 with 1,871 foreigners checked, Malaysian newspaper The Star reported on Saturday.

"Of those detained, Indonesians were the highest with 220, followed by Chinese nationals (89), Bangladesh (78), Myanmar (42), Filipinos (22) and others.

"Action will also be taken against employers who hire illegal immigrants under Immigration Act 1959/63," he said in a statement.

Khairul Dzaimee said the department is committed to conducting large scale continuous operations nationwide following the conclusion of the Back For Good (B4G) repatriation program on December 31.

A total of 190,471 illegal immigrants registered for the B4G program, he said.

"Those who failed to sign up will be rounded up."

The Home Ministry has set a target of arresting at least 70,000 illegal immigrants this year, Khairul Dzaimee said.

The department has given illegal immigrants ample time to surrender through the B4G program, he added.

In July 2019, the Malaysian government announced the implementation of the B4G program from August 1 to December 31, in order to let illegal immigrants return to their countries.
