The US has ordered staff member at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington to leave the country, after he was accused of domestic violence.
Bangladesh Embassy Press Minister Shamim Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune the official concerned is Delwar Hossain, a grade 3 employee of the passport and immigration office.
He added that Delwar has been asked to report in Dhaka by May 12. Once in Dhaka, he will report to the Home ministry.
Foreign Ministry Director General (Administration) Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury echoed the press minister, but neither of the officials could ascertain whether Delwar had left the country yet.
Earlier, Washington police had launched an investigation into allegations that Delwar tortured his wife. The Bangladesh Embassy also sent three officials to his home as part of a shadow investigation.
After the allegations were reportedly found to be true, Delwar and his wife had claimed that the dispute had been settled and promised never to engage in domestic violence again.
The Bangladesh Embassy conveyed the couple’s assurance to the US State Department, but this did not stop them from ordering Delwar to leave the country.
Delwar had joined the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington around two years ago, Press Minister Shamim Ahmed said.
