Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has congratulated former Indian president Pranab Mukherjee after he was conferred the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.
Sheikh Hasina congratulated the former Indian president through a phone call on Saturday morning, according to the Press Wing of the Prime Minister's Office, reports UNB.
In another message, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen also congratulated Pranab for winning the award.
"India's first Bangali president Pranab Mukherjee is a real jewel. The Bangali politician played a very important role in strengthening relations between Bangladesh and India," he said.
On Friday, Pranab Mukherjee and two others - Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and singer Bhupen Hazarika - were conferred the Bharat Ratna.
Among them, Deshmukh and Bhupen Hazarika were awarded posthumously. The Bharat Ratna was last conferred in 2015.
Pranab Mukherjee was the president of India from 2012-17.
