Britain has slapped a temporary embargo on direct air cargo shipment from Dhaka to London citing security issues.
UK's Department for Transport in a post on Tuesday said a recent security assessment found that Dhaka airport was yet to meet some international security requirements.
“As part of a set of interim measures, cargo will not be allowed on direct flights from Dhaka to the UK until further notice,” it read.
It asked airlines carrying cargo between Bangladesh and the UK on indirect routes to ensure “it is re-screened before its final leg into the UK”.
“The UK government is working with the government of Bangladesh to support them in improving standards of aviation security,” the post adds.
After the October 31 crash of a Russian plane in Egypt, killing all 224 people aboard, the UK urged Dhaka to improve security at Shahjalal International Airport.
Regional Liasion Officer for Aviation Safety for Asia-Pacific region Jon Lovsey highlighted security lapses for passenger movement and in cargo handling system at Dhaka airport in his reports.
The UK said scanner operators at Dhaka airport were not trained and that explosive tracing machines were not in function.
Earlier, Australia banned air cargo from Bangladesh, Syria, Egypt, Yemen and Somalia as a preventive security measure from December 19.
