Experts highlighted the importance of applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) in libraries to align with modern information service demands.
They made the remark at an event organized by the Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists, and Documentalists (BALID) at the Women's Voluntary Association auditorium in Dhanmondi on Saturday.
The lecture is titled "Application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Libraries".
It was chaired by BALID President Dr Mohammad Moniruzzaman and Vice President Regina Alam.
In his welcome speech, BALID Secretary General AKM Nurul Alam introduced the event, which featured Dr Salma Mumtaz, director general of the Directorate of National Archives and Libraries, as the chief guest.
Special guests included Dhaka University’s Chairman of the Department of Information Science and Library Management Prof Dr Md Roknuzzaman and Director of Information Technology Prof Dr BM Mainul Hossain.
The keynote presentation was delivered jointly by Dr Muhammad Hossam Haider Chowdhury, retired librarian of Independent University Bangladesh, and Assistant Director Md Mubassir Ahsan.
Dr Salma Mumtaz emphasized the role of the Directorate of National Archives and Libraries in providing modern library services and offering training programs.
Prof Roknuzzaman addressed the importance of knowledge acquisition, while Prof Mainul Hossain focused on the practical aspects of AI, praising the young talent of Bangladesh who continue to excel in various academic Olympiads both nationally and internationally.
The event, attended by over 100 professionals and students, featured discussions on the challenges and opportunities of AI in libraries.
During a question-and-answer session, participants explored how AI could be further simplified and integrated into library operations.
In his closing remarks, BALID President Dr Moniruzzaman stressed the need for more training on AI and expressed the organization’s commitment to working with professionals, government institutions, academia, and industry to further develop library services in Bangladesh.
