BFUJ, DUJ protest for justice in Sagar-Runi murder, condemn journalist oppression

The Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) staged a protest at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Sunday, demanding justice for the murder of journalists Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, as well as an end to the ongoing oppression of journalists.

BFUJ President Ruhul Amin Gazi said: “We have travelled across the nation seeking justice for Sagar-Runi’s deaths. A movement began, but it was ultimately stifled.”

Kader Goni Chowdhury, former joint secretary of the Press Club, questioned: “Who was the powerful person behind these killings? We want to know why the probe report has been delayed 111 times.”

He also called for the enactment of laws to protect journalists.

Poet and former DUJ President Abdul Hye Sikder urged the reopening of shuttered media outlets and demanded justice for the 65 journalists who were killed during the tenure of the Awami League government.

DUJ General Secretary Shahidul Islam said: “To this day, the public remains unaware of the motive behind Sagar-Runi’s killing. We know who killed them, and we expected the investigation to reveal this, but it has not happened.”

Other prominent journalists and leaders from various journalist organizations were also present at the protest.
